I understand what your saying but when i look at 40lbs at 6months thats only 6.6 lbs a month since birth, and when i spell it out that way it just dosen't look right. That ends up being 3.3 pounds lighter per month as the growth chart goes. We know what happens if a dog is to heavy but what can we cause by having a puppie short 3.3 lbs a month.

no puppys or dogs are the same. i recently got a puppy and her back bone and hip bones where Very visable and so i just upped her feed untill she now has no visable ribs or back bone but still a definition in her loin but thats where they should be. my first shepherd boy from a puppy was a VERY large puppy huge bone i kept him skinny but he was just a giant puppy at 5 months i put him on adult food to slow his growth down he still got pano ect but luckly no HD he has great hips and elbows but hes still a very large dog

that is him at 4-5 months

this was him at 14 weeks with my 85 lb male lol he was a very large puppy

Some one said the worst place to get advice on amount to feed a dog is from the dog food bag. Second worst is from a Vet! Go to your working club for some advice. Keep em lean and happy.

Stockholm study which clearly indicates that if the GSD is more then 40 lb at 6 mo then the hips dysplasia increases dramatically............i believe chart said 6months should be 50lbs?????????

what do you guys think about the german way(yeah not all, but i c a lot since i am here) they keep their dogs ribs showing............?

so what visual signs mean ok, i was goin by, (some unoffical shit i made up in my head) no point on the body wider than the shoulders from a top view, no stomach sag from the side.........what should i be looking @/4, now thats my 6 mth old girl, i judge that way, my lil guy, i was just feeding like bag said, which i c now is wrong, but what am i 2 look for to know hes getting enough food, and while were on it water, (whater i was doing an oz per lb per day)

You should be able to see the shape of the rib cage but not necessarily be able to count the individual ribs.

I also question the results of the Stockholm study as I expect that most of my male pups have weighed more than 40 lbs. at 6 months and weren't dysplastic. Different dogs will develop at different rates so I question any study that a) uses a one size fits all approach to making such a determination and, b) doesn't seem to have had a methodology for determining which of the pups had a predisposition to HD at the start of the study.

BTW, I current have a 4 1/2 month old that weighs close to 50 lbs. and he's not the least bit fat...he's just a big pup. Just keepyour pup lean and you should be fine.
